What to prepare before starting a cosmetics OEM project

A practical brief covering positioning, volume, packaging, budget, and compliance.Watertrust Zhuhai · Product & Industry Notes
In brief

When starting a cosmetics OEM/ODM project with Watertrust Zhuhai, the goal is not to prepare every document at once but to clarify the product, audience, and channel. A project may begin from zero or extend an existing hero product with a collection or complementary benefit-led products, followed by progressive confirmation of trademark, packaging, and compliance materials.

Begin with direction, not a finished brief

The most useful starting information is the product category, target user, core objective, sales market, and channel. For a benefit-led product, add the intended benefit, key ingredients, usage occasion, and target price where available.

If the direction is incomplete, share a sample, image, or link and explain what you like and what you would change. Watertrust Zhuhai can help turn this into a workable route for benefit-led skincare or personal-care products.

An existing product can become the starting point for a collection

Some clients already have a stable product, positive user feedback, or a distinctive ingredient story. The project can extend that product into a collection—for example, adding a cream, mask, or toner around a serum—or create a complementary product that strengthens an uncovered care step.

Watertrust Zhuhai first reviews the existing product's positioning, available formulation information, user feedback, price range, and channel, then decides whether to preserve its core logic or develop products with clearly complementary roles. A sample and the information available can begin the feasibility discussion even when complete documentation is not available.

Clarify the brand and trademark route early

Packaging design, labels, and later documentation all depend on how the brand will be used. Clients may use their own or legally authorised trademark, or discuss an existing Watertrust trademark authorisation option, subject to written scope and terms.

Trademark application and preparation take time. Early clarity reduces repeated packaging changes.

Share packaging, volume, budget, and timing

Share any preference for bottles, sachets, or other formats, together with estimated volume, target cost, and expected launch timing. Packaging may be supplied or customised by the client or selected and ordered with Watertrust's support.

Packaging design can begin in several ways: the client may provide a finished design, share visual references or describe a preferred style, or ask Watertrust Zhuhai to present several initial templates—such as minimal, professional, natural, or technology-led routes. Once a direction is selected, the design can be developed around the brand position, product features, and sales channel. Templates guide the discussion rather than restrict the final layout.

Product format, filling method, and packaging supply conditions affect minimum quantities and timing. These inputs support a practical discussion; they do not require every decision to be final at the first meeting.

Prepare filing or registration materials by product type

Ordinary cosmetics generally follow filing administration, while special cosmetics require registration under current rules. Common materials may include the product name, formula, product standard, label, test report, and safety assessment, subject to the specific product and current requirements.

Claims require appropriate support. Once the product and packaging direction is confirmed, labels, efficacy evaluation, and related documents can be completed according to the filing or registration route, sales plan, and intended claims.

How much is enough for the first conversation?

Everything does not need to be ready at once. A defined project can move into evaluation and sampling, while a target user, reference product, or sales channel is enough to begin a discussion.

The purpose of the initial brief is to identify conditions that affect formulation, packaging, compliance, cost, and timing early enough to reduce rework.

Frequently asked questions

Can I contact a manufacturer with only a product idea?

Yes. A category, target user, sales channel, or reference sample can start the first discussion, and the brief can be developed step by step.

Can a project start before I own a trademark?

The product direction can be discussed first, but the trademark route should be clarified early. A client may prepare its own or an authorised trademark or discuss an agreed Watertrust authorisation route.

Why is there no single minimum order quantity for every product?

Bottles, sachets, filling methods, and packaging supply conditions differ. Minimums therefore need project-specific review, while material preparation and split deliveries may be discussed where practical.
